Where it is
Cherating, a laid back beach resort on the east coast of Malaysia, is about 330km from Kuala Lumpur City Centre. It is a popular tourist destination with locals and foreigners alike. April to October is the peak season, although serious windsurfers may want to visit in November when the wind is strongest. That said, November is also one of the wettest months and weather hazards include flash floods.
How To Get There
By Car: Depending on the traffic, it's about four hours' drive from Kuala Lumpur City Centre by car, via E8, the East Coast Expressway. Head towards the north, follow the signs to Batu Caves/Gombak, and then enter Karak Expressway. From there, it's all the way straight to the East Coast Expressway. Exit at Jabor, and follow the signs to Kemaman. Toll fare for private cars are RM6 (KL to Karak) + RM21 (Karak to Jabor).
Make sure you have sufficient funds in your Touch n Go card for the toll fare before you embark on your journey. If you do not have a Touch n Go card, you can purchase a generic card (with Touch n Go embedded) at most petrol stations.
By Air: The flight is about an hour from KLIA to Kuantan. Upon arrival at the airport, rent a car to Cherating. Follow the signs to Kemaman. It's about an hour's drive from the airport. Alternatively, you might be able to arrange with the hotel/chalet to pick you up at Kuantan airport.
By Bus: Take a bus from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan), an interstate bus terminal at Bandar Tasik Selatan. The journey takes about five hours and the bus fare is about RM30. There is a bus that drops you off at D-Cherating Cafe but I forgot the name of the bus company. There are many bus companies at TBS, just make sure you confirm the bus will drop you off at Cherating before you buy a ticket.
Things To Do
1. Watch turtles lay eggs at the beach - my number one favourite activity! Let your hotel or chalet know you wish to watch turtles laying eggs and they'll inform you when there are turtles landing. Read my post on turtles watching here.
There is also a turtle sanctuary which you could visit.
2. Windsurfing
4. Firefly River Cruise
Getting Around
Cherating is a small fishing village, so getting around on foot is possible. You can also rent bicycles if you prefer not to abuse your feet too much.
